25 Rezaq Faraj 1943-2009

Doting suburban father. Immigrant success story. If he were content with blending in, Rezeq Faraj could be a poster boy for the Canadian dream. But, of course, blending in is precisely what he’s not about. He stands out because he speaks out – bearing witness to unwelcome facts, like his ploughed-over birthplace and the ethnic cleansing which triggered his life’s involuntary odyssey. “I refuse to vanish or disappear. I want to see justice done, not only for my fellow villagers and I who survived, but for all the Palestinian people who suffered from injustice and are still suffering under occupation and in refugee camps. Having had no real childhood, having had to struggle every day to achieve a decent existence for me and my family, havi ng seen all the injustices around me everywhere I’ve been - all of this has made me a militant, an activist for justice, peace and human rights anywhere and everywhere.”

”I think most North Americans really don’t know about the Palestinian plight. They are busy trying to survive in this world of consumers, trying to make their lives comfortable. Most people really don’t know, and they don’t go out of their way to become informed. If they know anything about the situation, it consists of falsehoods that have been served up by their governments and the media.”

In Rezeq’s view, the variety of viewpoints and strategic approaches among supporters of Palestinian human rights is a plus. “As long as the various aims and objectives support the just cause of the Palestinian people, diversity contributes to the strength of the movement. The difference in approaches and planning of political actions in North America can seem to complicate things, but diversity is essential because it ultimately contributes to strengthen the solidarity movement.

“Having suffered from violence, I became a non-violent person. I know what it is and do not wish it for anyone, even my worst enemy. I refuse and will never accept violence. But I also refuse to accept injustice being done to anyone.”

“The Palestinian people’s refusal to vanish or die will eventually overcome the odds and win, like all other people in the past who have struggled for peace with justice and against foreign domination. This might not come to pass during my lifetime, but it will eventually come to life someday. The media won’t be able to keep the truth hidden forever. Average people who know the facts are already speaking out. That day I will rest in peace – whether alive or dead – and not before.”

25 Interview w/ Israeli Lawyer Emily Shaeffer

Dateline – 21 September 2009
Israeli forces invaded Bil’in once again just before 1am. Six jeeps entered the village through the gate in the wall occupation. Two jeeps stopped at the house of Mohammed Ahmed Yasseen (age 21) and searched for him in the ground floor apartment belonging to his mother. Four jeeps stopped at Abdullah Mahmoud Aburahma’s (age 37) house and searched for him there. Two of these jeeps left to quickly search for Yasseen Mohammed Yasseen (age 21) at his home.

International and Israeli activists accompanied local Palestinians at all three locations to protest against the invasions and to document events. The house searches were relatively short-lived, compared to the numerous previous invasions. The soldiers delivered letters to all three families demanding that the three men go to Ofer prison to meet ‘Captain Fo’ad’ of the Shabak. This was the first time such a demand was written in Arabic.

There has been speculation that an Israeli lawyer is attempting to show that this long series of night arrests is illegal because no forewarning was given to any of the Palestinians so far seized and detained. These letters may be an attempt by the Israeli army to pre-empt a court order demanding a warning before any arrest.-September 2009..
Time segments - Interview w/ Abraham Weizfeld - 514 284 6642
doctoral candidate Abraham
Weizfeld, of the Department of Political Science at l’Université du
Québec à Montréal (UQAM)

Presentation of the issues as they stand on the status of
Weizfeld's doctoral thesis that makes a critique of the State of Israel from a
Jewish perspective. This thesis work was expelled without the
right of appeal by a university administrator in 2005 after having been
accepted by a majority of the academic jury. The UQAM Ombudsman’s
inquiry concluded that this expulsion was in contradiction to the regulations of the university, however
the non-academic administration still refuses to allow the matter to be considered by the Jury of
academics or by any other academic’s evaluation. As a result
the legal appeal is seeking a judgment to allow the academic procedure of evaluation to continue.

Abraham Weizfeld will be speaking on his own behalf with the assistance of
counsel from Me. Patrice Blais, at the September 14-16, 2009 hearing at the Palais de Justice, 1 rue
Notre-Dame E., room 2.08 at 9 am Monday.

Discussion -

-Describe the procedural irregularities that have led to the legal action
-How will you present your arguments at the Palais de Justice?

-Can you outline your thesis itself and some of the reasons that you think it
was expelled in such a unilateral and irregular fashion?

25 Movie Review – 1981 – Un film de Ricardo Trogi

-A coming of age film that we have seen many times but this with the distinctive Quebec references and perspective. Specifically that of Ricardo Trogi, the son of Italian immigrants who presents the Quebec perspective of first generation Quebecers. The kids who were in grade school in the 1980s are the definers, not neccessarily the makers of the Quebec standards and thinking of today. Their attitudes are summed up very neatly in one of the closing lines from the film, spoken by the boy who narrates the film, a young Ricardo Trogi himself – “Telling the truth, that is what real life is all about, but not if you are the only one doing it”

-This movie asks some serious questions of the value of objects and virtues, and whether monetary worth is enough to determine value, the suggestion made by this movie is that monetary worth is not enough, a suggestion that I agree with.

-One of the most important allusions that this film makes, through the dialouge of Ricardo’s mother is that Children of the 80s, who grew up passing the same attitude down through the 90s and the first decade of the 2nd millenium, are programmed, by advertisers and education – “school reform” – to become robots who are in place to simply ask their parents for material items and increase the pressure on parents, who are already chasing increasingly unreasonable standards, to an unsustainable level.

-There is enough in this film for anyone of any age to take something constructive, whether it be an alternate perspective or simply the enjoyment of reminiscing through the period costumes and props. One note of caution is that there is cursing and talking about “adult” situations, but I found that even these instances were presented in such a way as to promote discussion between people of different ages who might be seeing this film rather then in such a way as to cause discomfort or embarassment.

30 Toronto Declaration regarding Boycott of International Film Festival’s city-2-city spotlight on Tel Aviv

September 10, 2009

For Immediate Release

Toronto Declaration Unstoppable
Despite a week of attacks, artists from around the world rush to sign the declaration

The organizers of the Toronto Declaration – No Celebration of Occupation are pleased to announce that more than 1000 people from around the world—including many Israelis—have signed on in protest of TIFF’s City-to-City Spotlight on Tel Aviv. New signatories include music and cinematic legends Harry Belafonte and Julie Christie. Actor Viggo Mortensen, who will be attending this year’s festival, just added his name. Leading intellectual figures Noam Chomsky, Judith Butler and Anne McClintock have also recently endorsed the declaration, along with prominent Canadian writers Rawi Hage, Joy Kogawa, Dionne Brand, and Kerri Sakamoto. Celebrated local filmmakers Velcro Ripper, Min Sook Lee and Lynne Fernie have also signed the letter.

International support for the declaration continues to grow despite denunciations, unfounded personal attacks on earlier signatories Jane Fonda and Danny Glover, and despite an aggressive campaign of misinformation regarding the letter’s content.

The organizers want to make it clear that the letter does not call for a boycott of TIFF. Several of the signatories have much anticipated films in this year’s festival and many others plan to attend. Nor is it a protest against Israeli filmmakers, many of whom signed the letter. It is a statement of principled opposition to TIFF’s highly political decision to honor the city of Tel-Aviv with a celebratory “spotlight” this year.

Such a celebration, especially in light of the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza, not only ignores Palestinian suffering, but also helps to whitewash Israel’s continued violations of international law. According to Naomi Klein, one declaration’s co-authors, “Publicly opposing TIFF’s decision is not an act of censorship, but its opposite: the use of cherished rights of freedom of speech and opinion.”

In an effort to promote ongoing critical debate about Tel Aviv, Israel and Palestine, organizers will be holding a public forum featuring key signatories on Monday, September 14, 2009. There will be an opportunity for press to talk to spokespeople prior to the event, beginning at 5pm. Location and further details to follow.

The full text of the letter, including new signatories is available at: http://torontodeclaration.blogspot.com/

When I heard the Toronto International Film Festival was holding a celebratory “spotlight” on Tel Aviv I felt ashamed of my city. I thought immediately of Mona Al Shawa, a Palestinian women’s-rights activist I met on a recent trip to Gaza. “We had more hope during the attacks,” she told me, “at least then we believed things would change.” Ms. Al Shawa explained that while Israeli bombs rained down last December and January, Gazans were glued to their TVs. What they saw, in addition to the carnage, was a world rising up in outrage: global protests, as many as a hundred thousand on the streets of London, a group of Jewish women in Toronto occupying the Israeli Consulate. “People called it war crimes,” Ms. Al Shawa recalled. “We felt we were not alone in the world.”
