Canada’s Role in Supplying Lab Animals for Testing

Canada’s role in supplying specially-bred animals for laboratory testing both in Canada and abroad remains a tightly-knit secret. Recently, an article in The Gazette appeared and exposed how passengers on a flight to Paris became aware of a shipment of beagles on their Air Canada jet when they heard the dogs screaming from the belly of the plane. Canada does laboratory testing on up to 2 million animals each year. It also supplies an unspecified amount of animals to Europe for this same purpose.

“We were shocked to hear some flight attendants say this goes on regularly – dogs get shipped to Paris for experiments.” Because Quebec’s animal protection law is vague and weakly enforced, the province provides a steady source of dogs for laboratories both here and abroad, animal rights activists said.

Liz White, a Director at the Animal Alliance of Canada, joined Joe Broadhurst of CKUT Radio in Montreal to discuss some of the issues surrounding this practice and the efforts of animal activist groups to learn the truth. (11:30)

March for Kyoto to mark Earth Day

International Earth Day will be celebrated Sunday in Montreal by a march condemning what environmental groups see as the federal government’s inaction over the Kyoto Protocol.

The march is to start at 1:30 p.m. at Lafontaine Park and make its way to Mount Royal Park.

The Coalition Quebec Vert Kyoto, a collection of environmental advocates, and other groups announced the rally yesterday. The group says its goal is to make the Conservative government honour Canada’s obligations under the treaty, designed to combat climate change.

“We want people to go into the streets to send a message to the government of Canada: You must act now,” said Jocelyn Higginson of Greenpeace Quebec.

In February, Environment Minister John Baird said adhering to Kyoto would result in “economic collapse.” [link]

Andrea Lindsay of SHAC7

This morning the Friday Morning After spent the show discussing the US war on activism and the resulting massive Menu Foods pet food recall. 1000s of pets will die due to an unregulated industry that owns the government to such a degree, it has the government lock up any opposition to their bottom line.

Andrea Lindsay is the spokesperson for the Shac7, a group of animal rights activists put in prison for trying to expose the crimes at Huntingdon Research Lab.

Windshield Wiper Fluid in Canada’s Environment

David Donnelly joined FMA on March 2, 2007 to discuss it.

The skull & crossbones are there for a reason. But the labels don’t tell the whole story of Canada’s use of this toxic product. Some products contain up to 90% Methanol with no identification on the bottle. Research suggests long-term exposure to methanol fumes that enter cars through the engine could be cancerous.

In 1995, Canada estimated 24,000 tons of emissions from wiper fluid every year went into the environment.

David Donnelly is a long-time environmental lawyer and advocate. He is legal counsel for Environmental Defence.

Monsanto vs Percy Schmeiser

Percy Schmeiser is a farmer from Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto’s Round-Up Ready Canola. Monsanto’s position was that it didn’t matter whether Schmeiser knew or not that his canola field was contaminated with the Roundup Ready gene, or whether or not he took advantage of the technology (he didn’t); that he must pay Monsanto their Technology Fee of $15./acre. He joined Joe Broadhurst to discuss what happened to him and to warn of the effects Terminator seeds will have on the world’s food supply.

“With These (Pesticide-Stained) Hands I Demand the Future”

With these hands I demand the future that poverty wages have stolen from me. Farmworkers returning from picking tomatoes bought by companies, such as McDonald’s, show hands stained with pesticides and heavy with hard work.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is declaring that they are tired, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, of “relying on the goodwill and understanding of those who profit from exploiting us,” and are escalating their campaign to convince McDonald’s to end human rights violations in its supply chain.

As their first major action in this new phase of the campaign, they are organizing two days of action in McDonald’s corporate backyard, Chicago. The CIW will hold a march and protest outside McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, IL, on the 13th to be followed by a day of colorful street protests in downtown Chicago in the Latin American tradition of “Carnaval” on the 14th.

The CIW is asking all the communities who stand in solidarity with the CIW join us this April 13th and 14th in Chicago to demand a fast-food industry that doesn’t rely on the endless exploitation of farmworkers.

5 Minutes to Midnight – The Doomsday Clock Is Clicking

The terrible and still unprecedented destructive power of nuclear weapons led Albert Einstein to observe, “With nuclear weapons, everything has changed, save our way of thinking.” As we stand at the brink of a second nuclear age and at the onset of an era of unprecedented climate change, our way of thinking about the uses and control of technologies must change to prevent unspeakable destruction and future human suffering.

The Clock is ticking.
