Norway celebrates Oscar animated short victory for Montrealer Torill Kove
OSLO, Norway (AP) – Norway celebrated Torill Kove’s Oscar victory for her animated short film “The Danish Poet,” the story of a young poet who travels to Norway to find inspiration by meeting Norwegian writer and Nobel Prize winner Sigrid Undset. Although Kove, 48, lives in Montreal and her project was backed by the National Film Board of Canada, the story “could not have been more Norwegian,” she said. “I am Norwegian, and there is not a trace of doubt in my soul that this film is 100 per cent Norwegian,” Kove said. Her animated short film “My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts” was nominated for an Oscar in 1999. “The Danish Poet” is narrated by Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, who received Oscar nominations for her roles in “The Emigrants” and “Face to Face.” Jan Erik Holst of the Norwegian Film Institute said the Academy Award victory “puts Norway on the map,” especially for its small, scattered teams of animators. Thor Heyerdahl’s “Kon-Tiki,” which tells the story of the Norwegian adventurer’s harrowing 101-day voyage from Peru to Polynesia in a balsa-log raft, won a documentary Oscar in 1952.
the Seventh Annual Art Matters Festival
from March 2-18 2007
Bigger and better than ever and yours to enjoy! Art Art and more art
This festival is a clear declaration that what Concordia students are exploring, creating and contributing is relevant and very much matters. Students in the arts, are often faced with uncertainty of how to negotiate their way around the larger art scene as well as their personal art practice. Gaining experience and being able to test how they might position themselves in this structure is invaluable. Art Matters offers a unique opportunity to gain direct experience with every aspect of arts organizing; applying, writing, jurying, selecting, curating, meeting, cooperating, promoting, directing, installing and hosting.

Iraqi Civilian Suffering – The Media Silence
In all the endless coverage of the American ”surge” committing 20,000 extra troops to the war in Iraq, there has been barely a word about the likely consequences for the civilian population. A report in the Lancet medical journal last year estimated that, as of July 2006, 655,000 Iraqis had died as a result of the US-UK invasion – one in seven families had lost a household member.
Over the last month, some 2,340 articles in the national UK press have mentioned the word ‘Iraq’. Of these, seven have also mentioned the words ‘civilian casualties’. Over the same period the words ‘Iraq’ and ‘Matty Hull’ have appeared in 128 articles. As most people will know, Matty Hull was a British soldier killed in a ‘friendly fire‘ incident.
This is hardly a scientific analysis, but it gives an idea of the relative silence surrounding the issue.
Noam Chomsky Joins 9/11 “Jersey” Widows in Calling for Release of 9/11 Documents
Noam Chomsky joins 9/11 “Jersey” widows in calling for release of 9/11 documents
February 14, 2007 — Noam Chomsky has signed a petition written by the 9/11 “Jersey” widows calling for the release of classified documents relating to the 9/11 attacks. The Muckraker Report has contacted him by e-mail and verified that the individual listed on the petition is indeed Noam Chomsky. Chomsky’s name is #6432:
That said, now that Chomsky has agreed to sign the widows’ petition, the Muckraker Report would like to see the following people sign too: Alexander Cockburn and crew at Counterpunch, the editorial staff at the Nation, Michael Moore, Barbara Ehrenreich, Amy Goodman, Maureen Dowd, Frank Rich, Seymour Hersh, Nicholas Leman at the New Yorker, Christopher Hayes, anyone who writes for the Daily Kos, including Kos himself, and the absolutely divine Camille Paglia.
Like I said in my article from a few days ago, 9/11 Widows Keep on Asking the Tough Questions, the Jersey widows say that once they have 15,000 signatures on their petition, they’re going to head back to Capitol Hill. Right now they have 6,600 signatures, 1023 of them in the last 60 hours. Please e-mail the link of the petition to all your friends. Ask them to sign and forward the petition to their e-mail contacts. The Jersey widows have to get 8,400 more signatures. They need your help. Come on – give them a hand!
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TODAY! CLICK HERE.

“Legacy of Torture” – CoinTelPro & the Black Panther Party
In 1971, John Young, a San Francisco police officer was killed. Members of the Black Panther party were arrested, charged and then tortured by San Francisco and New Orleans police. Since the police used torture to extract their confessions, eventually, the charges were dismissed. Now more than 35 years later, the case has been reopened. On January 23rd, 2007, some of those same men were arrested again.
In this special documentary from the Freedom Archives, we hear from some of the accused men themselves. They describe the torture and how they were targeted for their political activities. The “Friday Morning After” aired this segment on February 23, 2007.
